Attach Hardiebacker cement board to the top and sides of the frame. Hardiebacker is a water and mold resistant cement backing board which is perfect for outdoor use.
These ceramic tile chess boards can be made in an assortment of colors and with a variety of different edge moldings. They look great, are perfect for indoor or outdoor games and relatively easy to build. Check out the short videos listed below to see how easy it is to build your own outdoor, indoor and table version.
Each square is adhered to the hardiebacker with mortar. Then we miter cut the corners of the molding and used mortar them in place.
We decided on FlexBond motor and Fusion Pro grout. Both are designed to give the best durability for outdoor use.
Start by choosing tile for the project. Then measure the tiles and the size of the boarder tile to find out size of square. We made a frame out of pressure treated 2x4s. We cut the 2x4s down so the height would allow for one form of small mosaic tiles.
By removing every other square and replacing it with a contrasting color its easy to make up a chess or checkers board design. You need eight squares in each row. The tiles used in this project had 6 squares per row. We needed a total of three tiles to make up the board and tile the sides.

How to Make a Ceramic Tile Chess or CheckersBoard
After all the small tiles are mortared in place and allowed to dry for 24 hours its time to grout. Using a gloved hand apply grout and press it into each groove of the chess board. The excess grout is then removed and the board wiped down with a damp sponge to remove grout from the tiles surface. Repeat the wash down process if needed.
We picked two mosaic tiles. These tiles have small squares that are attached to a mesh backing.
